Leoben, Austria – The EU-funded FlashPhos project, which has been advancing phosphorus recovery over the past five years, will hold its closing conference on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Leoben, Austria. The event is organized by the Steinbeis Europa Zentrum, the University of Stuttgart, Italmatch Chemicals, and Aufbereitung Recycling und Prüftechnik GmbH (ARP), where participants will have the opportunity to tour the FlashPhos pilot plant.
Europe faces a strategic challenge: High-quality white phosphorus is indispensable for chemical, pharmaceutical, and industrial applications, yet the continent is heavily dependent on imports. FlashPhos has developed a comprehensive process that recovers high-quality white phosphorus from sewage sludge and makes it available to the European market as part of a circular economy model.
The closing conference will feature presentations, discussions, and a tour of the pilot plant at Aufbereitung Recycling und Prüftechnik GmbH (ARP). The event will showcase project results, innovations in thermal recycling, and practical solutions for securing Europe’s phosphorus supply. Experts from research, industry, and politics will share their knowledge and discuss opportunities for scaling up sustainable phosphorus recovery.
“This event marks the end of the project’s official duration, but it is by no means the end of FlashPhos innovations. The closing conference is also an invitation to continue advancing phosphorus recovery in Europe,” said Luigi Di Rienzo of Italmatch Chemicals. “The partnerships, insights, and solutions developed will continue to shape the European phosphorus industry for many years to come.”
Registration is open until April 14, 2026; on-site attendance is limited to 80 people. We warmly invite anyone interested in the fields of sewage sludge treatment, thermal processes, building materials, the circular economy, and critical raw materials to attend.
