A stated goal of the global cement industry is to reduce mercury emissions. On the one hand, environmental protection is a top priority; on the other hand, it is also a matter of complying with legal limits.
To reduce mercury emissions, the Austrian companies A TEC Production & Services GmbH,SCHEUCH GmbH, and w&p Zementdeveloped a new technical innovation: the XMercury Splitted Preheater System.
How it works:
Hot gases (~800 °C) are extracted from the lower part of the preheater. In the Xmercury system (split preheater), the filter dust is thermally treated to achieve a suspension temperature of ~350 °C. The treated, pure filter dust is separated from the gas stream using highly efficient cyclones and a ceramic filter and is returned to the pyroprocessing system already preheated.
The remaining pure gas, which still contains mercury, is cooled and purified using sorbents. In a further dust removal step using a conventional bag filter, the mercury is separated from the gas stream.
Advantages:
- Up to an 80% reduction in emissions
- No additional heat loss during treatment
- Low additive consumption - low additive costs
- Handling low gas volumes (3–10%)
- The system uses highly effective Cylons
- Low life-cycle costs
- No need to separate the raw meal
- Low disposal costs
- Low investment costs thanks to a compact design
